Snake Information

Basic Information

Reptiles without legs are referred to as snakes and have all the same characteristics as other reptiles. This means the presence of scales, laying eggs, breathing air and spending minimal time raising young. They are of course cold-blooded and are unable to maintain a continuous body temperature. Susceptible to weather changes, harsh winters and summers alike are very hard on their bodies. It is for this reason that they typically exhibit behaviors like burrowing under the ground for warmth and heat.

Locations

Snakes are found all over the world in almost all climates, with the exception of the harsh cold areas near the poles. Some snakes live on land, while others spend their whole lives in water and are aquatic. There are many species of snakes and they all have developed special ways to live depending on the region.

Diet

They are all carnivores and the diet will vary depending on the size of the snake. Smaller ones will typically stick to insects and frogs. The larger snakes will eat a variety of fish, birds and rodents that they are able to capture. The snake’s jaw is able to dislocate in order to make room for larger animals that cannot otherwise fit through its mouth. Most snakes only need to eat once or twice a week, depending on what their last meal was.

Venom

How it catches its prey depends on the type of snake. Some rely on their strong muscles to wrap around the prey animal and suffocate it, while others may use venom. The snakes have a gland that makes and stores the venom, then pushes it through its fangs and into its prey when it is able to land a bite. Venom works by paralyzing their victims. Once the animal is unable to move, the snake is finally able to eat.

Poisonous snakes are usually colorful or loud in order to warn other animals to leave it alone. This warning might make it harder for a snake to sneak up on its prey, but it also makes the snake safe from predators who would have it for dinner.

Make Your Home Snake Unfriendly

Control Their Food Source

One of the top reasons that snakes may be invading a home is due to the fact that a normal residential home is in the snake’s eyes a buffet. Snakes feed upon many pests normally found in or around a regular home. To do this step most effectively the homeowner should if at all possible identify the type of snake they are dealing with, since different snakes have different diets. In general though, for all varieties of snakes it is a good move to remove such pests as mice, rats, frogs, and grasshoppers. These small pests are the main meal for many types of snakes.

Repair Exterior Home Damage

The next proactive step a homeowner can do is to visually inspect their homes foundation. Snakes are capable of entering in any hole that is the size of a quarter or larger. Another common port of entry for snakes is gaps between siding, windows and even the gap found between the garage door and floor. Any holes a homeowner encounters should be covered or filled so as to not allow for any entry.

Mow Your Lawn Regularly

An easy and simple thing to do to keep snakes out is to mow the yard regularly. Snakes enjoy the cover that tall uncut grass gives them. Snakes are hunters and if the owner removes the good hunting ground the snakes will move on to greener pastures.

Remove Unnecessary Clutter

Finally remove any and all clutter that may be within or outside of the home. Piles of brick or piles of junk, no matter, to a snake these things are home sweet home. Snakes love clutter, clutter for a snake is a safe haven. Homeowners should not allow snakes to feel safe, they should make the snakes feel like the unwelcome guests they are
